Volunteer

Volunteer with Play Like a Girl

Play Like a Girl is seeking volunteers to serve as community moderators and supporters to other women as they consider and explore a future as a role model or mentor.

The Play Like a Girl Community launched in August 2021 to provide an online platform for women to connect, inspire, and inform one another about opportunities to develop their leadership capacity and grow their network. As our online community grows and we work to provide a safe, non-judgemental, and engaging space for women, we know we cannot do this without the support of volunteers.

Volunteers will provide direct support to the women who are thinking about mentoring middle school girls in their lives someday and be leaders in encouraging important conversation and discussion around the barriers and opportunities that exist for women and girls. There are two volunteer opportunities currently available:

Welcome Committee Moderator

Our inaugural welcome committee will be composed of 3-5 women who will welcome new members, get them oriented to the Community, and be a resource for women as they start exploring a role as role model or mentor to middle school girls. As a moderator, you will be responsible for:

  • Sending new members personal messages that encourage them to complete their profile and introduce themselves
  • Greeting new members when they introduce themselves
  • Sharing resources and ways to get started in the Community
  • Posting weekly to encourage conversation
  • Soliciting feedback from members and documenting their responses

Affinity Group Moderator

Play Like a Girl Affinity Groups are private groups for women to congregate based on race, ethnicity, sexuality, etc. These groups provide a safe space for women to discuss the various barriers, challenges, and triumphs associated with being a member of a group that might experience additional prejudice. As a moderator, you will be responsible for:

  • Approving new group member requests
  • Welcoming new members
  • Posting at least 2x a week to encourage conversation
  • Maintaining a welcoming, nonjudgmental space that ensures nonpartisanship
  • Sharing resources that are helpful to members as they explore
  • Identifying any opportunities to improve engagement with the Community.

All moderators are required to ensure members are following the Community Guidelines and ensuring members feel welcome, supported, and can engage in a nonjudgmental, nonpartisan space.

What We’re Looking For In Moderators

We are seeking moderators who are passionate about supporting women from all different backgrounds, ethnicities, and political affiliations. You don’t need to be an expert on sport, STEM or being an effective role model or mentor to be a moderator! All we ask is that you are willing to provide a supportive and engaging space for women and be creative and flexible as the community continues to grow. If you don’t know the answer, that’s okay, you can ask us or we ask that you take some time and find a solution for a member on your own. Past experience with moderating and/or contributing to an online community isn’t required, but is a plus!

After selection, volunteers will participate in a one-hour onboarding call. Monthly 30-minute check-ins with volunteers are also required and will be scheduled one month in advance. Moderators should expect to commit 1-2 hours weekly supporting the Community.
